Harry T. Moore, African American civil rights leader and martyr, investigated lynchings that occurred in Florida from 1943 to the time of his death− caused by injuries sustained when his home was bombed in 1951. Moore left his mark on civil rights issues including voter registration, police brutality, equal salaries, and integrated schools. Founder of the Brevard County Chapter of the NAACP, and later Executive Secretary of the Florida NAACP, Moore also created the Progressive Voter’s League, and greatly increased the number of African American voters in the state. Juanita Barton, one of the first students at Titusville High School to integrate, is a community organizer. She served as the chairman of the Community Outreach Activities for East Mims Progressive Civic League Inc., Vice President on the Community Development Block Grant Advisory Board, and a member of the Community Action Advisory Board.
